The Foundations Collection is a series of figurines and collectibles to accessorize the home with beauty and inspirational messages. The collection was designed by Karen Hahn for Enesco and launched in January 2002.
To understand the purpose of the collection, you have to bear in mind the timing of its introduction. Launched shortly after the terrible events of Sept 11, 2001, the nation was still in shock and searching for meaning. Karen and her team aimed to provide comfort by reminding people of the foundations of life. In Karen's own words:
"Inspired to share uplifting words of hope and wisdom in a unique way, the Foundations collection couples my own handwriting with thoughts and prayers that bring meaning to life's wonders. My desire is that the collection continues to convey inspirational messages that reflect our connections to family, faith and home - the foundation of life."
The earliest pieces in the collection are angels and elegant ladies with styling reminiscent of Art Nouveau. They have their inspirational messages embedded in the dresses, cloaks and scarves worn by each figurine, rather than in accompanying paperwork or packaging. Karen explains: "I was looking for a method where a consumer could pick up a gift and have the story right in their hand."
In the second year of the collection, figurines of innocent children were included, with popular children's prayers written on each piece. Again, in Karen's own words:
"Children are a blessing and their words and prayers are blessed with innocence and simple clarity. The vision behind Foundations was to inspire with uncomplicated words and soothing colors, and to develop a series focusing on children's prayers was a natural step. It was as clear as the faith on my own children's faces."
Snowmen were introduced in 2004, along with hanging ornaments. The collection has continued to grow with new additions each year, expanding the range of figurines, other collectibles and home d?cor items. However, each addition to the collection is in keeping with the mission; to represent the foundational values of family, faith and home.
All Foundations figurines are manufactured from stone resin, often with crystal accents.
