A Buyers Market
This short article considers the argument for buying collectibles at a time when it seems illogical to spend money unnecessarily.

With the type of tough economic situation we are currently experiencing, any discretionary products tend to suffer a fall in demand. Faced with real struggles to put food on the table and pay the mortgage, adding another item to your collection is a long way down the list of things to do. In times like these many people are looking to sell or downsize their collections to raise much-needed cash. This, of course, adds to the supply of available items.

As anyone with an understanding of basic economics will tell you, reduced demand and increased supply leads to a reduction in price. In other words, we are in a buyers market.

It is unlikely you will find an opportunity to build your collections and add those hard-to-find pieces at better values than you can find today. We all know prices increase over the long term, particularly for rare (out of production) items, which can only get rarer. Therefore, when we are in a recessionary period, we should look to take advantage of it before the opportunity escapes us.

Antiques and collectibles are a wise investment in recessions. What other options do we have? Banks are paying so little interest right now, our house values continue to depreciate and the stock market is uncertain, at best. While no investment is guaranteed or fool-proof, a current investment in collectibles could help offset inflation concerns and could prove to be extremely profitable once the market comes out of the current recession.

In any market collectors always experience the fun of collecting, but in current conditions collectors experience the added benefits of getting great deals and making good long-term investments.
