This David Winter cottage was sculpted and issued in 1989 as the 5th Guild piece. It was issued in commemoration of the 50th anniversary of the outbreak of World War II and to celebrate the role of the ordinary citizens of Britain who comprised the Home Guard; the last line of defense, which was fortunately not needed.
This piece depicts a thatched cottage typical of many areas of Britain in the 1930s, but it also includes a concrete pillbox (defensive bunker) and a defiantly-flying Union Jack British flag. Pillboxes were common along much of Britain's coastline during WWII.
This cottage was retired in 1991. It measures 5" tall by 6.5" wide and comes in the original box with certificate of authenticity.
